Five best bets for Matchweek 20

Looking ahead to Matchweek 20 of the 2023/24 EPL season, we break down the five best bets for the New Year’s period of Premier League action.

1. Man United H2H vs Nottingham Forest @ $2.15

Granted, it’s a risky exercise getting on the up-and-down Manchester United this season. Erik ten Hag’s men have mixed the good with the (very) bad. But could United have finally turned a corner? A pulsating 3-2 win over Aston Villa, after going down 2-0, will do wonders for their confidence. This was a Villa outfit who had got results against both Man City and Arsenal in December. The spark is coming from their young guard, too. Alejandro Garnacho is in scintillating touch. Rasmus Hojlund has broken his EPL duck. Victory here won’t be easy, especially with Forest coming off a big win at St James’ Park, but if United repeat their second-half efforts against Villa they should walk away with three points.

Bet Now Nottingham Forest vs Manchester United

2. Liverpool -1.0 vs Newcastle @ $2.15

Newcastle are really beginning to struggle domestically, with four defeats in their last five games. The latest, a 3-1 hammering on home soil to lowly Nottingham Forest, will particularly sting. St James’ Park was a fortress for the Magpies last season, but it was thoroughly breached in that clash. Now, travelling to another fortress in Anfield, Newcastle are right up against it. Unbeaten in 12, the Reds are beginning to present as genuine title prospects, and a 2+ goal victory here is on the cards.

Bet Now Liverpool vs Newcastle

3. Luton Town +1.0 vs Chelsea @ $2.50

Coming off back-to-back wins, the first time they’ve done so in the top flight since 1991, Luton could prove a significant roadblock here for Chelsea. The Blues themselves are coming off a win against Crystal Palace, but it was hardly a three points that instils genuine confidence. Chelsea have conceded 59 EPL goals in 2023 — their most in a calendar year in over three decades. Luton have ground out points against the likes of Liverpool, Wolves and Newcastle at Kenilworth Road this season, and I’m backing them to get a draw or better here.

4. Phil Foden (Man City) anytime goalscorer vs Sheffield Utd @ $1.88

At 1-0 down at half-time against Everton midweek, staring down the barrel of a sixth winless EPL match in seven, Manchester City needed a spark. And it came, emphatically, in the form of Phil Foden. Having scored in the Club World Cup final, Foden sparked City to life with a fizzing 20-yard strike that proved the impetus for a confidence boosting 3-1 win at Goodison Park. The young star has already bagged five goals this EPL season, and I’m backing him to do so again here in what should be a comfortable City win.

Bet Now Manchester City vs Sheffield United

5. Dominic Solanke (Bournemouth) anytime goalscorer vs Tottenham @ $2.20

With six wins in their last seven EPL outings, Bournemouth are the form team of the competition. And their purple patch is thanks, in large part, to the dominant form of Dominic Solanke. The striker has bagged eight goals in his last seven outings, taking him to 12 goals for the season — equal with Liverpool’s Mo Salah and just two behind leader Erling Haaland (Man City) on 14. And, with Spurs coming off the back of a 4-2 loss to Brighton, I’m backing the big man to continue his super form when they travel to North London.
