EPL Tips – Everton V Liverpool

22:30 (AEDT), Sat 17th Oct @ Goodison Park

History: Played 287: Liverpool 121 V Everton 82 (84 Draws)

Last meeting: June 21, 2020 (EPL): 0-0 draw at Goodison Park

Final Thoughts: We’ve had a fortnight to digest the events of Week 4, but Liverpool’s 7-2 loss to Aston Villa is still near-impossible to comprehend. A Mo Salah brace was the defending champs’ only respite in one of the biggest EPL shocks of all time, coming on the back of three straight wins for Liverpool.

Everton, meanwhile, are flying at the top of the table. After opening with a 1-0 upset of Tottenham, the Toffees have put away West Brom (5-2), Palace (2-1) and Brighton (4-2). Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored in every game – for a total of six goals – while Colombian signing James Rodriguez scored a second-half brace against Brighton.

Everton are on a staggering 22-match winless streak against Liverpool. Last season the Toffees were subjected to a 5-2 thrashing at Anfield but held the eventual champs to a scoreless draw at home following the EPL’s post-COVID resumption.

The $3.80 outsiders won’t get too many better chances to knock off the Reds, given their outstanding, free-scoring start to the campaign.

Tip: Double Chance and Total – Everton or Draw and Over 2.5 @ $3.25

EPL Tips – Chelsea V Southampton

01:00 (AEDT), Sun 18th Oct @ Stamford Bridge

History: Played 106: Chelsea 46 V Southampton 31 (29 Draws)

Last meeting: December 26, 2019 (EPL): Southampton 2 d Chelsea 0 at Stamford Bridge

Final Thoughts: It’s been a patchy start to the season for Frank Lampard’s Chelsea, but a 4-0 drubbing of Crystal Palace helped the team move past a 2-0 loss to Liverpool and a fortunate 3-all draw with West Brom. The Blues scored four second-half goals against Palace, including a pair of penalties from Jorginho.

Southampton dropped their first two games – to Palace and Spurs – but have bounced back with consecutive wins over Burnley (1-0) and West Brom (2-0). Keeping a couple of clean sheets must be a decent confidence boost for a side that leaked five goals against Tottenham.

Southampton broke a nine-match winless streak (including eight losses) against Chelsea with a 2-0 upset at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day last season.

The early evidence is the Saints are no easybeats, but Chelsea should have too much attacking strike for the visitors.

Tip: Result and Total – Chelsea and Over 2.5 @ $2.00

EPL Tips – Manchester City V Arsenal

03:30 (AEDT), Sun 18th Oct @ Etihad Stadium

History: Played 200: Arsenal 88 V Man City 57 (45 Draws)

Last meeting: July 18, 2020 (FA Cup): Arsenal 2 d Man City 0 at Emirates Stadium

Final Thoughts: Title favourite Manchester City are yet to get out of first gear, following up their jarring 5-2 loss to Leicester City with a 1-all draw against Leeds United. Pep Guardiola will be eager to unlock his superstar-studded side’s killer instinct sooner rather than later.

Arsenal have made a satisfactory three-win start to the season, bouncing back from a 3-1 loss to Liverpool with a 2-1 defeat of Sheffield United in Week 4. A win over a high-quality outfit would give the Gunners’ campaign a real kick-start.

Arsenal’s 2-0 FA Cup semi-final upset in July ended a seven-match losing streak against City in whiche they were outscored 20 goals to two. Both EPL clashes last season finished 3-0 in the Citizens’ favour, with Kevin de Bruyne scoring three goals across the two wins.

A difficult game to get a read on with City at home but in dusty form. Consider the safe route with Arsenal still providing solid value with two goals’ start.

Tip: Handicap – Arsenal +2 @ $1.67

EPL Tips – Newcastle United V Manchester United

06:00 (AEDT), Sun 18th Oct @ St James’ Park

History: Played 169: Man United 87 V Newcastle 43 (39 Draws)

Last meeting: December 26, 2019 (EPL): Man United 4 d Newcastle 1 at Old Trafford

Final Thoughts: Liverpool’s simultaneous implosion helped divert attention away from Manchester United’s Week 4 shocker – but the Red Devils desperately need an emphatic response after being pounded 6-1 at home by Tottenham. Man United have only a win over Brighton to show for three outings this season, also losing to Palace at Old Trafford.

Newcastle United will be satisfied with their start to the season, with a 3-0 loss to Brighton – as bad as it was – the only misstep. They have wins by two-goal margins against West Ham and Burnley plus a draw against Spurs in the bank. Callum Wilson scored a second-half brace in the 3-1 win over the Clarets to take his season tally to four.

Newcastle boast two wins and a draw in their last four against Man United at St James’ Park, including a 1-0 result last season. Man United won the return clash at Old Trafford 4-1.

With Anthony Martial and Edison Cavani both missing from the Man United line-up, it’s tempting to get on Newcastle as a $5 home underdog. But expect some blowback from Jose Mourinho’s chastened side. The over may be the better way to go with three of Newcastle’s and all of Man U’s games producing three-plus goals.

Tip: Total – Over 2.5 @ $1.71

EPL Tips – Sheffield United V Fulham

22:00 (AEDT), Sun 18th Oct @ Bramall Lane

History: Played 67: Sheffield 30 V Fulham 22 (15 Draws)

Last meeting: March 6, 2018 (Championship): Fulham 3 d Sheffield 0 at Craven Cottage

Final Thoughts: The fairytale team of last season following their promotion, Sheffield United find themselves languishing in second last with four losses from as many games. They finally bagged their first goal late in their Week 4 assignment, but it wasn’t enough for the Blades to prevent a 2-1 loss to Arsenal.

Fulham are the only team below Sheffield on the ladder. The Cottagers have also been held to nil three times in four losses, but a 1-0 loss at Wolverhampton in Week 4 may have provided a bit of a confidence boost.

Fulham have won their last three against Sheffield, scoring 10 goals in the process. Goals should be at a premium this week given what we’ve seen from these sides, however, with a low-scoring draw or the under shaping as the best options.

Tip: Total – Under 1.5 @ $2.94

EPL Tips – Crystal Palace V Brighton and Hove Albion

00:00 (AEDT), Mon 19th Oct @ Selhurst Park

History: Played 103: Brighton 40 V Crystal Palace 37 (26 Draws)

Last meeting: February 29, 2020 (EPL): Crystal Palace 1 d Brighton 0 at Amex Stadium

Final Thoughts: The wind created by wins over Southampton and Man United in the opening fortnight of the EPL season has been sucked out of Crystal Palace’s sails. After an acceptable 2-1 loss to in-form Everton, Palace were hammered 4-0 by Chelsea. The teams were level at halftime.

Brighton and Hove Albion have won one and lost three of their four games. The Seagulls are scoring plenty of goals (8) but conceding a lot too (10). Losses to Man United (3-2) and Everton (4-2) were arguably made to look better than they were courtesy of stoppage-time consolation goals.

Palace had the better of this rivalry last season, scoring a 1-0 away win after being held to a 1-all draw at home.

A huge opportunity for both clubs to regain a bit of momentum. Palace’s last outing was a poor example, but the hosts’ superior defence should carry them to a welcome three-point haul.

Tip: Result – Crystal Palace @ $2.63

EPL Tips – Tottenham Hotspur V West Ham United

02:30 (AEDT), Mon 19th Oct @ Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

History: Played 214: Tottenham 98 V West Ham 64 (52 Draws)

Last meeting: June 23, 2020 (EPL): Tottenham 2 d West Ham 0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Final Thoughts: A miserable 18 months or so for Tottenham hit a massive high point courtesy of a 6-1 stomping of Manchester United at Old Trafford in Week 4. Spurs have scored 12 goals since being beaten 1-0 by Everton in their opening assignment. Son Heung-min has racked up six and Harry Kane three.

On the back of a 4-0 rout of Wolverhampton to open their season’s account, West Ham United added to the list of stunning Week 4 results by overwhelming Leicester 3-0 at King Power Stadium. Jarrod Bowen scored twice against Wolves before grabbing the late sealer against the Foxes.

West Ham boast seven wins and two draws from their last 17 encounters with Tottenham. But Spurs took out both encounters last season – 3-2 at London Stadium and 2-0 at home.

Impressive as Hammers have been recently, Spurs appear to have turned over a new leaf and will be determined not to let these three points slip away as their fellow heavyweights stumble around them.

Tip: Half-time/Full-time – Tottenham/Tottenham @ $2.38

EPL Tips – Leicester City V Aston Villa

05:15 (AEDT), Mon 19th Oct @ King Power Stadium

History: Played 102: Leicester 43 V Aston Villa 34 (25 Draws)

Last meeting: March 9, 2020 (EPL): Leicester 4 d Aston Villa 0 at King Power Stadium

Final Thoughts: Leicester City’s rollicking start to the season – scoring 12 goals in wins over West Brom, Burnley and Man City – hit a significant speedbump in the form of a 3-0 home loss to West Ham in Week 4. Meanwhile, Turkish international Caglar Soyuncu is under an injury cloud that could give Wesley Fofana his club debut.

In an opening month chock-full of shock results, Aston Villa has been at the forefront. After beating Sheffield and Fulham to nil, Villa stayed unbeaten by annihilating Liverpool 7-2. Oliver Watkins scored a dream first-half hat-trick, while Jack Grealish sealed the deal with two second-half goals.

Leicester romped to a pair of big League wins over Aston Villa – 4-1 away and 4-0 at home, with Jamie Vardy scoring two goals in both. But Villa won the clubs’ EFL Cup tie.

Villa are destined to come back to the field at some stage, but their efforts so far deserve respect.

Tip: Handicap – Aston Villa @ $2.00

EPL Tips – West Bromwich Albion V Burnley

03:30 (AEDT), Tue 20th Oct @ The Hawthorns

History: Played 131: West Brom 56 V Burnley 46 (29 Draws)

Last meeting: March 31, 2018 (EPL): Burnley 2 d West Brom 1 at The Hawthorns

Final Thoughts: West Bromwich have picked up a solitary point in their promotion campaign – albeit an overachieving one from a 3-all draw with Chelsea, a match they were unlucky not to win. They came up empty in a 2-0 loss at Southampton in Week 4.

Burnley are one spot below the Baggies in 18th. The Clarets have conceded eight goals and scoring just two in losses to Leicester, Southampton and Newcastle.

Punters can be forgiven for struggling to get excited about this match-up, or either team’s prospect of winning. Back the draw.

Tip: Result – Draw @ $3.20

EPL Tips – Leeds United V Wolverhampton Wanderers

03:30 (AEDT), Tue 20th Oct @ The Hawthorns

History: Played 131: West Brom 56 V Burnley 46 (29 Draws)

Last meeting: March 31, 2018 (EPL): Burnley 2 d West Brom 1 at The Hawthorns

Final Thoughts: The only promoted club capable of doing something with their season, Leeds United have been highly impressive in their long-awaited return to the Premier League.

An unlucky 4-3 loss to Liverpool, consecutive wins over Fulham and Sheffield, and a 1-all draw with Man City makes for satisfying reading for coach Marcelo Bielsa and Peacocks fans.

Wolverhampton have bookended dismal losses to Man City (3-1) and West Ham (4-0) with more typical grinding wins over Sheffield (2-0) and Fulham (1-0). But both teams they’ve beaten are well and truly among the early-season strugglers. Leeds are a tricky prospect for Wolves.

Leeds head in as narrow favourites at home and it’s hard to argue with that billing.

Tip: Result – Leeds United @ $2.50
