EPL Tips & Preview – Week 8

Find the back of the net with tips for Week 8 of the 2021-22 EPL campaign, including a fascinating match-up between Leicester and Man United.

EPL Tips – Watford V Liverpool

22:30 (AEDT), Sat 16th Oct @ Vicarage Road, Watford

History: Played 34: Liverpool 24 V Watford 6 (4 Draws)

Last meeting: February 29, 2020 (EPL): Watford 3 d Liverpool 0 at Vicarage Road

Final Thoughts: Liverpool head to Vicarage Road looking to keep their record as the EPL’s only unbeaten team intact. The second-placed Reds won four of their first five games, but they are coming off back-to-back draws against Brentford (3-all) and Man City (2-all) – with a 5-1 UCL rout of Porto sandwiched in between.

Mo Salah has been on a tear, scoring in six of Liverpool’s seven Premier League fixtures – including the last five straight – as well as picking up a double against Porto.

Promoted Watford sit 15th and have proved reasonably competitive. In the past three rounds they have beaten Norwich (3-1), drawn with Newcastle (1-1) and lost to Leeds (1-0). Isamila Sarr has scored four of the Hornets’ seven goals this season.

More significantly, Watford have brought in Claudio Ranieri – Leicester’s 2015-16 title-winning manager – to replace Xisco Munoz.

Watford won the teams’ last clash in the 2019-20 season – a shock 3-0 result against the previously unbeaten eventual champs – after losing the previous four by a combined 15-0.

But this looks like a straightforward one for the heavyweights, with Watford failing to score four times already this season.

Tip: Liverpool To Win To Nil @ $2.18

EPL Tips – Southampton V Leeds United

01:00 (AEDT), Sun 17th Oct @ St Mary’s Stadium, Southampton

History: Played 94: Leeds 47 V Southampton 27 (20 Draws)

Last meeting: May 18, 2021 (EPL): Leeds 2 d Southampton 0 at St Mary’s Stadium

Final Thoughts: Seventh-placed Southampton hosts 16th-placed Leeds in a battle of two desperate clubs.

Both sides have racked up plenty of draws: the Saints are yet to win a game, following up four straight stalemates with consecutive losses to Wolves (1-0) and Chelsea (3-1), while Leeds chalked up their first victory in Week 7 – 1-0 over Watford – after drawing three of their previous five.

Leeds had the wood on Southampton last season, winning 3-0 at Elland Road and 2-0 at St Mary’s Stadium. Patrick Bamford scored the first goal in both matches.

But Bamford has just one goal so far in an attack that has struggled to fire, scoring just seven goals this season. Southampton have been even less potent, finding the back of the net just five times.

The draw or the under loom as the best options in a game that is tough to get a good read on.

Tip: Total – Under 2.5 @ $2.19

EPL Tips – Norwich City V Brighton and Hove Albion

01:00 (AEDT), Sun 17th Oct @ Carrow Road, Norwich

History: Played 90: Norwich 34 V Brighton 32 (24 Draws)

Last meeting: July 4, 2020 (EPL): Brighton 1 d Norwich 0 at Carrow Road

Final Thoughts: Last-placed Norwich jagged their first point of the campaign in Week 7 – from a scoreless draw at Burnley. It was the fifth time the Canaries have been held scoreless this season, but keeping a clean sheet for the first time after six straight defeats was a positive at least.

Brighton, meanwhile, continue to overachieve. Sixth on the ladder, the Seagulls won four and lost just one (to Everton in Week 3), while they are coming off back-to-back draws against Crystal Palace (1-1) and Arsenal (0-0).

Unbeaten on the road this season, there’s solid value in getting behind the surprise-packet Seagulls head-to-head against a Norwich side that simply lacks firepower.

Tip: Result – Brighton @ $2.10

EPL Tips – Aston Villa V Wolverhampton Wanderers

01:00 (AEDT), Sun 17th Oct @ Villa Park, Birmingham

History: Played 130: Aston Villa 56 V Wolverhampton 41 (33 Draws)

Last meeting: March 6, 2021 (EPL): 0-0 draw at Villa Park

Final Thoughts: Wolverhampton ran into some long overdue form before the international break and can leapfrog 10th-placed Aston Villa with a win on the road here.

Wolves have won three of their last four, including victories over Southampton (1-0) and Newcastle (2-1) in the last two rounds. Not exactly big scalps, but after being held scoreless in four of their first five games it’s a significant step forward. The club is chasing three straight wins for the first time since June 2020.

Villa went into Week 7 on the back of impressive upsets of Everton (3-0) and Man United (1-0), but they were brought undone by a 71st-minute own goal in a 2-1 loss at Tottenham.

Last season Aston Villa bagged a 1-0 win at Wolverhampton, before the teams played a scoreless draw at Villa Park.

Aston Villa are unbeaten at home this season, outscoring their visitors 6-1. Wolves have won their last two away but I’ll back the hosts in.

Tip: Result and Total – Aston Villa and Over 1.5 @ $2.75

EPL Tips – Leicester City V Manchester United

01:00 (AEDT), Sun 17th Oct @ King Power Stadium, Leicester

History: Played 133: Man United 68 V Leicester 35 (30 Draws)

Last meeting: May 11, 2021 (EPL): Leicester 2 d Man United 1 at Old Trafford

Final Thoughts: Leicester City are anxiously trying to avoid a fifth straight game without a win – but their task won’t be easy with Manchester United, who themselves are trying to earn their first victory in three games, coming to town.

The Foxes are well off the top-four pace in 13th, following up losses to Man City and Brighton with 2-all draws against Burnley and Crystal Palace. Encouragingly, Jamie Vardy has scored four goals in Leicester’s last three games, but only three teams in the league have conceded more than their 12.

Fourth-placed United picked up four wins and a draw in the first five weeks but have stumbled in their last two – a 1-0 loss to Aston Villa and a 1-all draw with Everton, both at Old Trafford.

After enduring a 12-match winless run against United, Leicester wrangled bragging rights last season with a 2-all draw at home and a 2-1 upset at Old Trafford in the EPL either side of a 3-1 FA Cup victory.

But with both teams searching for a bit of form and confidence, it’s shaping as a tighter, low-scoring affair.

Tip: Double Chance and Total – Man United or Draw and Under 2.5 @ $2.50

EPL Tips – Manchester City V Burnley

01:00 (AEDT), Sun 17th Oct @ Etihad Stadium, Manchester

History: Played 107: Man City 52 V Burnley 30 (25 Draws)

Last meeting: February 3, 2021 (EPL): Man City 2 d Burnley 0 at Turf Moor

Final Thoughts: Manchester City are nicely placed in third, two points off the competition lead. After a Week 1 loss to Tottenham, they have gone unbeaten – including a 2-all draw at Liverpool in Week 7 when they twice came from behind.

Winless Burnley occupy a spot in the bottom three. They are coming off consecutive draws against Leicester City (2-all, the only time they have scored more than once) and last-placed Norwich (0-0).

Burnley have won just one of their last 27 against Man City and have lost the last eight by a combined 30-1.

This has the makings of a slaughter with City already boasting five clean sheets and a pair of 5-0 wins this season.

Tip: Handicap – Man City -2 @ $2.00

EPL Tips – Brentford V Chelsea

03:30 (AEDT), Sun 17th Oct @ Brentford Community Stadium, Brentford

History: Played 14: Chelsea V Brentford 4 (2 Draws)

Last meeting: January 28, 2017 (FA Cup): Chelsea 4 d Brentford 0 at Stamford Bridge

Final Thoughts: Brentford are piecing together a superb promotion season, well and truly earning their shock seventh-place standing. The Bees have lost just once – to fellow overachievers Brighton in Week 4. They have bookended a 3-all draw with Liverpool (the only time they have conceded more than one goal) with fine away wins over Wolves (2-0) and West Ham (2-1) in their past three.

There’s a new test on the horizon for the EPL’s budding Cinderella story, however, with Chelsea arriving on their doorstep.

The league leaders bounced back from their maiden loss of the campaign – 1-0 to Man City in Week 6 – with a 3-1 win over Southampton, though they needed late goals from Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell to get the job done.

Chelsea are battling a raft of injuries, but they should still come out on top here.

Tip: Result and Total – Chelsea and Over 1.5 @ $2.00

EPL Tips – Everton V West Ham United

00:00 (AEDT), Mon 18th Oct @ Goodison Park, Liverpool

History: Played 145: Everton 73 V West Ham 41 (31 Draws)

Last meeting: May 9, 2021 (EPL): Everton 1 d West Ham 0 at London Stadium

Final Thoughts: Everton are fifth on the ladder, responding positively to their 3-0 loss to Aston Villa (their first of the Premier League campaign) and EFL Cup exit at the hands of QPR in the space of three days. The Toffees accounted for Norwich 2-0, before drawing 1-all away to Man United in Week 7. Andros Townsend scored in both games.

Meanwhile, West Ham’s newfound place among the EPL’s top echelon is under threat after just one win in their last five games. They are coming off a 2-1 loss at home to promoted Brentford, although two wins to start their Europa League campaign provides some perspective.

Everton have won four and drawn one of their last six against West Ham. But the teams both picked up a 1-0 away win over the other last season.

Everton have several players under injury clouds but they are slight $2.50 favourites at home. Both sides are among the EPL’s elite so far in terms of scoring, so I’ll back the over rather than hazarding a prediction of a result in a fascinating and crucial encounter.

Tip: Total – Over 2.5 @ $1.82

EPL Tips – Newcastle United V Tottenham Hotspur

02:30 (AEDT), Mon 18th Oct @ St James’ Park, Newcastle

History: Played 164: Tottenham 71 V Newcastle 59 (34 Draws)

Last meeting: April 4, 2021 (EPL): 2-2 draw at St James’ Park

Final Thoughts: Tottenham snapped a dismal three-match losing streak – in which Palace, Chelsea and Arsenal outscored them by a combined 9-1 – with a timely 2-1 victory over Villa in Week 7. It was the first occasion Spurs have scored more than one goal, though they did require a Villa own goal to break the deadlock.

Newcastle United remain winless, picking up three draws from their seven matches. They went down 2-1 at Wolverhampton in Week 7 and the strong mail is gaffer Steve Bruce is on the verge of losing his job.

The teams’ encounters both finished in draws last season – 1-1 at Tottenham and 2-2 at Newcastle.

Spurs haven’t done a lot to inspire punter confidence, but they are nevertheless a decent price to account for a beleaguered Magpies outfit.

Tip: Result – Tottenham @ $2.10

EPL Tips – Arsenal V Crystal Palace

06:00 (AEDT), Tue 19th Oct @ Emirates Stadium, London

History: Played 49: Arsenal 29 V Crystal Palace 5 (15 Draws)

Last meeting: May 19, 2021 (EPL): Arsenal 3 d Crystal Palace 1 at Selhurst Park

Final Thoughts: Tottenham’s archrivals and underachieving heavyweight kindred spirits, Arsenal sit 11th but are aiming to extend their unbeaten run to five matches. The Gunners won three in a row – squeezing past lowly Norwich and Burnley by 1-0 scorelines, then pumping Spurs 3-1 – before playing out a scoreless draw in Brighton in Week 7.

Crystal Palace have been better than their one win and 14th-place standing would suggest. Their only losses were to Chelsea and Liverpool, while their sole win was a 3-0 demolition of Tottenham and they have earned draws with the likes of West Ham and Leicester, coming back from a two-goal halftime deficit against the latter in Week 7.

Four of the teams’ last six clashes have finished in a stalemate. Last season they played out a scoreless draw at the Emirates, before Arsenal carved out a 3-1 victory at Selhurst Park.

Palace are $5.50 underdogs and have leaked eight goals in three away games so far. But Arsenal have played one good game this season and I like the visitors’ chances of forcing a draw or causing an upset.

Tip: Handicap – Crystal Palace +1 @ $2.75
