ODI Cricket Tips – West Indies V Australia

04:30 (AEST), Fri 23rd Jul @ Kensington Oval, Barbados

History: Played 141: Australia 75 V West Indies 60 (3 Tie, 3 NR)

Last meeting: July 21, 2021: Australia d West Indies by 133 runs (DLS) at Kensington Oval

Final Thoughts: Australia has swiftly put their heavy 4-1 T20I series defeat to West Indies behind them, romping to a massive win in the ODI opener. They get the opportunity to wrap up the rubber in Barbados on Thursday (AEST) after prevailing by 133 runs in the opener.

The tourists grinded their way to 9/252 on a tricky Kensington Oval surface. Josh Philippe (39 off 42 balls), opening in the place of injured captain Aaron Finch, held the top order together – aided by fellow ODI debutant Ben McDermott (28 off 48) and in-form Mitch Marsh (20 off 22).

An outstanding 104-run stand from stand-in skipper Alex Carey (67 off 87) and Ashton Turner (49 off 45) proved crucial. But their total looked somewhat subpar after they sat at 4/218 with five overs left. T20I player of the series Hayden Walsh Jr transferred his stellar form to the ODI arena with 5/39, while Alzarri Joseph (2/40) was also impressive.

Starc carries off Player of the Match honours

Mitchell Starc decimated the Windies batting line-up, however, taking 5/48. Starc took wickets in each of his first three overs, while Josh Hazlewood (3/11) also took scalps in three consecutive overs as the hosts slumped to 6/27.

A fine knock from captain Kieron Pollard (56 off 57) saved West Indies from complete humiliation. Hayden Walsh Jr (20 off 26) also displayed some lower-order fight. But the Windies’ dismal innings finished at 123 all out in the 27th over.

West Indies have now won just three of their last 28 completed ODIs against Australia, who have won 11 of the last 12 clashes.

Australia were $1.80 favourites heading into the series opener and have shortened considerably to take out game two. There were enough positive signs from West Indies’ bowlers and Pollard’s bat to suggest they can force a decider, but the Aussies should ride their momentum and confidence to a series-sealing victory.

Tip: Result – Australia @ $1.60
