Following her slashing 2nd placing in the Golden Slipper, Tony McEvoy’s filly, Oohood has been installed the $3.50 favourite in the G1 Sires Produce Stakes – despite coming into the race as a maiden.
Not since Excites success in the 2006 edition, has a horse been victorious when coming into the Sires winless.
While she’ll have to defy a trend that has stood for more than a decade, history also tells us she has a few things in her favour that warrant favouritism in this one.
As the second leg of the two-year-old Triple Crown, the Golden Slipper is naturally expected to be the traditional lead-up for the Sires.
With six of the last ten winners coming through the world’s richest race for juveniles, it too, has certainly proved to be the strongest form reference.
Fillies have also held their own against the boys in the same period, taking out four of the past ten editions.
Oohood will follow a similar path as 2016 victor, Yankee Rose who was the last filly to win the Sires.
She too, turned in a closing 2nd placing in the Golden Slipper at her previous start, before winning the race in dominant fashion.
And if history is any indication, we may be in store for a similar result.
Purton Pertinent To Fillies Success
Oohood’s rider, Zac Purton has a history in the Sires that coincides remarkably with the aforementioned winners she aims to replicate.
Not only was he aboard Yankee Rose in her triumph, but he too partnered the last horse to win the race as a maiden in Excites!
Perhaps a complete coincidence, but it’s without a doubt Zac Purton has a great affinity with this race, and that can only hold Oohood in good stead here.
Coupling the hoops record with the majority of history on her side, Oohood looks primed to breakthrough on the grand stage of The Championships – in what may be the first win of many for this talented filly.
