He’s familiar with boxing fans down under. Now, Sebastian Fundora is moving on to Keith Thurman as he looks to keep hold of his WBC Super Welterweight title.
Sebastian Fundora beat Aussie Tim Tszyu in his last fight, and now has Keith Thurman in his sights at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand.
The fight was previously scheduled for October before ‘The Towering Inferno’ injured his back. Now back to full health and on the back of three consecutive victories, Fundora takes on the former unified welterweight champion in Thurman.
‘One Time’ has had plenty to say in the build-up to this fight, but is a betting outsider to cause what would be a legendary upset for the older, smaller and relatively inactive veteran in overcoming the staggering reach advantage to win.
Sebastian Fundora
The WBC Super Welterweight World Champion is looking to continue his reign at the top of the 154-pound division after beating Tim Tszyu for a second time last year. Sebastian Fundora is a significant $1.26 favourite to get the job done, with the markets suggesting his victory comes before going to the judges ($1.86).
Tszyu himself has spoken about the difficulty of fighting a man standing at 197cm tall:
“He came out, threw the jab … and I was like ‘oh s**’.”*
The Aussie referred to Fundora as “a nightmare” to fight. His reach always makes things difficult. Fundora’s long arms allow him to throw short uppercuts and apply constant pressure. He’s not the most powerful puncher in the division, but he averages 70-90 punches per round and is relentless with his jab given his reach advantage every time he steps into the ring.

But given that advantage, Fundora doesn’t have a particularly strong high guard. He willingly collapses the distance to engage in close quarters, which does open him up to be tagged – if the opponent can reach…
Brian Mendoza knocked him out with a thunderous left hook as Fundora tried to close the distance, and he has provided Thurman with a few tips on how to do the same.
Fundora has all of the tools to make this a simple, clean fight. However, he has displayed the odd moment of weakness and carelessness. It leaves the door open for an upset, given Thurman’s boxing style.
Keith Thurman
At 175cm tall, Keith Thurman is giving up a massive height advantage to his opponent. It’s not too uncommon for him, and Thurman has made a career out of disrupting rhythm, lateral movement, and counter punches to make up for it.
He has fast hands, explosive timing and high boxing IQ. Thurman isn’t afraid to take a punch to throw one, either. He’s spoken about hitting Fundora with body shots, but knows he will have to get in close and into dangerous space. Still, he has “a lot of body” and wants to do “everything he can to bring this man down.”

While Thurman talks a big game, he’s not given himself many opportunities to fight a big game recently. He’s a $3.40 outsider for a reason having fought only four times in the last seven years. At 37 years old, he can’t be trusted in the late rounds, even before considering Fundora’s relentless pace.
If Thurman is to walk out of the ring with a win, it more than likely needs to come on the back of a knockout at $6.50.
Sebastian Fundora v Keith Thurman Boxing Tips
Thurman faces an uphill task in more ways than one here. He’s older, smaller, and has fought only 15 rounds since early 2019. Everything outside of a timely punch to an unsuspecting Fundora suggests he won’t have his arm raised in the end.
Fundora fights with relentless volume but can come into this one with confidence of winning it late. He has an impressive engine as it is, and it only becomes more of an advantage against a fighter of Thurman’s age and inactivity.
Expect Thurman to try a few things early. He’s smart enough to extend the fight and find success in the early rounds. Fundora’s willingness to fight inside will present Thurman with opportunities to use his movement and land what could be a fight-defining punch. However, Fundora’s work rate will take a toll in the end if he can’t land it. It’s more likely we see Fundora land the telling blow in the second half of the fight and end it before going to the judges.
