Final thoughts: Billed as It Doesn’t Get Any Better Than This, Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia put their unbeaten pro records on the line in a catchweight showdown at the T-Mobile Arena that shapes as one of the biggest boxing events of 2023.

With heavyweight super-fights falling through and bout featuring YouTubers garnering way too much attention, this event is one big-time boxing has been crying out for.

Adding extra spice to the Sunday afternoon (AEST) bout, the combatants recently agreed to put their entire purse up for grabs in a winner-takes-all bet.

Baltimore native Davis is 28-0, winning 26 of his fights since his 2013 pro debut by knockout. He’s won world titles in three weight divisions – super featherweight, super lightweight and lightweight – and has defended the WBA lightweight belt five times.

Davis has fought twice in the past year. The 28-year-old defeated previously undefeated Rolando Romero by sixth-round TKO last May.

Undefeated super featherweight Hector Garcia’s corner stopped their January bout – a close-fought affair until ‘Tank’ produced some damaging left hands – at the end of the eighth round.

Californian-Mexican Garcia turned pro in 2016 and has already accumulated a 23-0 record, featuring 19 knockouts. He carved out a seventh-round TKO win over Luke Campbell to win the vacant WBC interim lightweight title in 2021.

After a break of 15 months he claimed a unanimous decision over the 32-0 Emmanuel Tagoe, while just three months later in July last year he stopped Javier Fortuna in the sixth round. Garcia dominated Fortuna, scoring three knockdowns before finishing him off.

This is a mouth-watering encounter between two explosive fighters with devastating punching power. While both have regularly shown they have the engine to go into the later rounds, they don’t make a habit of going the distance and a win to either by knockout shapes as the most likely outcome.

The winner will be on a trajectory to boxing superstardom.

Of the two unbeaten warriors, 24-year-old Garcia has arguably shown more vulnerability and a propensity to be exposed defensively in the past. Davis’ list of victims is also of a higher calibre – though Garcia hasn’t exactly been fighting mugs.

Garcia has a handy height and reach advantage here and is lightning quick, but the nagging feeling is $1.45 favourite Davis’ menacing power will come to the fore if the fight extends beyond five or six rounds. Strap in for a massive bout with both fighters hellbent on making a statement – but the more experienced Davis looks the better bet.

Tip: Method of Victory – Davis by KO/TKO @ $1.70
