WILL EVANS’ daily preview serves up Australian Open tips for Aussie Maddison Inglis’ second-round encounter with fellow giant-killing qualifier Hailey Baptiste.
History: First meeting
Final Thoughts: Perth’s Maddison Inglis pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the Australian Open’s first round. But despite facing an opponent ranked 32 places below her, the 24-year-old wildcard heads into the second round as a slight underdog.
World No.133 Inglis stunned 2021 US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez 6-4 6-2 to record her maiden Grand Slam match victory. She held serve throughout the 82-minute defeat of the 23rd seed.
Inglis has five ITF titles on her résumé, though none since early-2020. Her lead-in form in Adelaide was only modest – but a career-best win over Fernandez underlined her ability.
Next up she faces Hailey Baptiste, who also claimed a surprise first-round win. The 20-year-old American battled her way through qualifying before outlasting former world No.4 Caroline Garcia 4-6 7-6 6-3.
This is just Baptiste’s fourth major, but she also chalked up a first-round upset in last year’s French Open, against Anna Blinkova.
Baptiste has built up considerable momentum, but three lengthy three-setters in the past 10 days may start to take their toll. Inglis was clearly the more impressive winner of the two on Tuesday and the backing of the Melbourne crowd should provide another key edge.
