The 2025 AFL season is days away from beginning as 17 teams look to dethrone the Brisbane Lions and be named the new AFL Premiers. The season will open up with the defending premiers taking on the 2022 Grand Final winners, Geelong Cats.
Adelaide Crows
One of the stars of the U18s Championships, No.4 pick Sid Draper enters this year after a great campaign in the SANFL with South Adelaide and captained his home state against the likes of Victoria Country and Victoria Metro.
It is understood that Draper has been impressive in the pre-season and is set to push for a spot in the starting team which further enhances the possibility that he will be able to win the 2025 Rising Star award.

The younger brother of midfielder Will Ashcroft, Levi is just as talented and many pundits have indicated that he may even be more gifted than his brother at his current age. A star during his junior years, he will slot straight into the Lions team and have quality players around him.
After it was confirmed that Carlton rookie Jagga Smith has been ruled out of the season after sustaining an ACL injury, Levi is now the heavy favourite to claim the 2025 Rising Star award.

A two-time Coleman Medal winner, Curnow once again enters the season as the favourite to claim the prestigious award and will look to bounce back after an injury-plagued 2024 campaign derailed his hope of becoming the first player to win three consecutive Coleman Medals since Gary Ablett Snr.
Finishing in third place last season with 57 goals, he led the standings for the first-half of the season before he sustained an injury that ruled him out of several matches. If he remains fit, Curnow will easily be able to get the goals that will see him skyrocket to the top of the standings.

The club’s leading goal-kicker for the past two seasons, Kyle Langford, has totalled 94 goals (43 in 2024 and 51 in 2023) but will need to improve his game even further this season if Essendon are not to finish near the bottom of the table.
The 28-year-old key forward will be the number one target in the Bombers’ forward 30 and if he can improve on his 53.1 per cent goal accuracy he will be a sneaky in the Coleman Medal race.

Although Fremantle has one of the best rosters on paper, the Dockers have struggled to live up to expectations and only managed to make the AFL Finals once in the past five seasons. But could 2025 be the year that the club finally win a flag?
Entering the season, there is also added expectations on coach Justin Longmuir who has re-signed for 2026 but on the condition that the club have a successful campaign. Longmuir and the players under will be looking to prove their doubters and critics wrong.

The runner-up to the 2024 Coleman Medal, Jeremy Cameron is one of the best players in the AFL and will have an even more significant role to play at Geelong following the retirement of fellow forward Tom Hawkins.
A veteran with 648 goals to his name, the 2019 Coleman Medal is known to kick big bags of goals in a single match and has a habit of kicking five or more goals during a game. Scoring 53 goals from 20 games last season, expect this to dramatically increase.

Can Jesse Hogan go back-to-back? Kicking 77 goals in the 2024 AFL season – 69 in the regular season – Hogan is coming off arguably the best season of his career and will be eager to continue his form as the Giants remain one of the favourites to win the 2025 Premiership.
The former Melbourne and Fremantle star will once again be a target in the forward line and if he continues to keep his goal accuracy and injuries to a minimum, he could very likely win his second consecutive Coleman Medal.

For the majority of the 2024 home-and-away season, the Hawthorn Hawks were the best team in the competition during which they were won eight matches by more than 45 points and had a remarkable 15-4.
Still a relatively young team compared to the other sides, they will look to build on their performances and success from last season and with Sam Mitchell behind them as their coach, they enter 2025 as one of the premiership favourites.

Struggling over the past few seasons with inconsistency and injuries to star players, the Demons could be seen as an underdog to win the premiership ahead of the 2025 AFL season.
If the likes of Christian Petracca and Max Gawn are able to stay fit and healthy, the club still have the roster that can upset the other teams in the competition and will be a team to watch out for if they are able to qualify for the AFL Finals series.

Highly regarded as a high-impact and versatile midfielder, Finn O’Sullivan will look to bring a glimmer of hope to the Kangaroos and make sure that he deserved the No.2 pick in the most recent AFL Draft.
With Jagga Smith now ruled out of the season, O’Sullivan is one of the heavy favourites to claim the Rising Star award and has all the signs of being a star in the making. Also, playing in the midfield, he is set to earn more time with the ball and gather more disposals.

Port Adelaide has an elite midfield, with one of those players being Jason Horne-Francis. Still young, the midfielder has shown glimpses of his potential but has yet to reach the heights that he has been destined for since he was initially drafted at No.1.
Horne-Francis will have an even bigger role to begin the season with Zak Butters set to miss the opening rounds due to injury and there has yet to be confirmation on when he will be available to return – even if he does, another Power player will need to stand up alongside him.

The No.1 draft pick, Sam Lalor, will lead the Richmond Tigers into the next generation and by all reports he has been extremely impressive in the pre-season and is expected to make his debut in Round 1 rather than be held back for later in the season.
Compared to the likes of club icon and future Hall of Famer Dustin Martin and Melbourne Demons premiership winner Christian Petracca, Lalor will be looking to showcase his talents every time he gets his hands on the ball and will be aiming to prove that he deserves the title of No.1.

Contracted until the end of 2032, Saints forward Max King enters 2025 after two back-to-back inconsistent seasons and will be attempting to repay the faith given to him by the St Kilda organisation.
Although he has only played in 23 matches over the past two years due to injury, King managed to score just 37 goals during this period and is far from his best of when he kicked 52 goals in 22 matches in 2022. Due to this, he can be expected to be a bolter for the medal and reclaim his great form.

Coming off a career-best season, Isaac Heeney will once again be one of the favourites to win the Brownlow Medal and was able to average 25 touches and score 34 goals last year. Set to be among the vote-getters in 2025, he is set to gather even more points if the Swans can continue their success on the field.
Aiming to bounce back from their 2025 Grand Final loss, the club will look to their star players such as Isaac Heeney, and the midfield-forward will be attempting to continue his form.

After a strong rookie season, all eyes will be on Harley Reid. While the gifted and talented midfield is a long shot to win the Brownlow Medal, if he can follow in the footsteps of Nick Daicos, there is no telling how many votes he could accumulate.
In his second season in the AFL, Daicos came extremely close to winning the 2023 Brownlow Medal and emerged as one of the elite players of the competition. Could this be Reid in 2025?

The Western Bulldogs best player, Bontempelli has shown in the past that no matter where the Bulldogs finish on the ladder he will be among the Brownlow vote-getters. After a slow start to the 2024 campaign, he will be looking to get off to a red-hot start to begin the year.
