Round 19 of the 2021 AFL season saw Geelong make another statement in the premiership race, while two medal hopes shortened into evens or better.

Here’s how it looked for punters:

Cats go clear

For a second time this season, Geelong has secured a ‘statement win’ over the team that edged them in last season’s Grand Final. The Cats followed up a 63-point win over Richmond earlier this season with a 38-point win over the Tigers on Sunday, after starting $1.37 favourites with Palmerbet. Chris Scott’s men were in complete control throughout the contest. For a third straight week, they kept their opponents to just one goal at half-time. The win sees them shorten from $4.50 into $3.75 outright AFL premiership favourites.

For Damien Hardwick, the reigning premiers have a lot of work to do. The loss sees them in serious doubt to miss the AFL Finals, now out to $2.37 with Palmerbet.

Bont at evens

Western Bulldogs skipper Marcus Bontempelli continues to shorten as 2021 AFL Brownlow Medal favourite. And after another stellar performance in Round 19 — this time highlighted by a dominant final term against fellow flag hopes Melbourne — has seen him into $2.00. It’s the shortest price we’ve seen all season, and widens the gap between him and the field. Bontempelli (31 disposals, two goals, and a game-high 10 clearances) was brilliant, and yet again proved the match winner.

Green better than evens

Speaking of gaps with the field, Greater Western Sydney’s Tom Green has further opened up the gap in the AFL Rising Star market after another strong performance in Round 19. Green (29 disposals) was terrific in the Giants’ ($2.25 pre-game versus Essendon) upset win over the Bombers. The 20-year-old is now into $1.90 to claim Rising Star honours in 2021. Next-best chance is Melbourne’s Luke Jackson, back at $7.00.
