The A-League is back for a frantic month of football action to crown a champion for the 2019-20 season. Adelaide United’s clash with Perth Glory could have a dramatic impact on the finals picture.
History: Played 42: Adelaide 17 V Perth 15 (10 Draws)
Last meeting: January 11, 2020: Perth 3 d Adelaide 0 at nib Stadium
Final Thoughts: Fifth plays sixth as the scramble for A-League playoffs spots heats up. Perth Glory have won nine and drawn seven of 22 games; Adelaide United are three points adrift with 10 wins and one draw from 23 outings. Western United lurk just one point further back with games in hand.
But Adelaide will be more than satisfied with their form since the competition’s resumption. An early goal from Norwegian import Kristian Opseth was enough for the Reds to get a 1-0 win over Brisbane Roar on the Gold Coast.
Opseth scored again in a 1-all draw with high-flying Wellington Phoenix on Saturday. Paul Izzo was the hero for Adelaide, saving a late penalty attempt. It’s quite the turnaround for United after they lost their last four games prior to the hiatus by a combined 15-4.
Perth have recorded a win and a loss since the restart. Dane Ingham’s first-half strike saw the Glory to a 1-0 win over last-placed Central Coast, but the young Kiwi’s second-half goal couldn’t prevent a 2-1 loss to the Phoenix four days later.
No recent glory in rivalry for Reds
Perth Glory are unbeaten in their last five against Adelaide United, winning four. The Glory prevailed in an epic semi-final last season, getting up in a shootout after the teams finished 3-all at the end of extra-time.
It was much more one-sided in their only meeting so far this season. Perth romped to a 3-0 home win in Week 14 as Joel Chianese, Bruno Fornaroli and Chris Ikonomidis scored.
The Glory start as $2.20 favourites, despite United’s superior form since the restart. Back the draw with only a few games left and both teams desperate not to walk away empty-handed.
