The A-League is back for a frantic month of football action to crown a champion for the 2019-20 season. It’s must-win for Western United and Western Sydney Wanderers on Friday night.

A-League Tips – Western United V Western Sydney Wanderers

19:30 (AEST), Fri 7th Aug @ Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, Sydney

History: Played 2: Western United 1 V Western Sydney 0 (1 Draw)

Last meeting: December 20, 2019: 1-1 draw at BankWest Stadium

Final Thoughts: Western Sydney Wanderers and Western United are locked on 30 points, five points adrift of sixth-placed Adelaide. But Wanderers are clinging to the slimmest of A-League finals hopes, while United are in the playoffs race up to their eyeballs.

Wanderers are heading into their second-last match. They need to win both and hope other results go their way. A 1-all draw with Central Coast and a 1-0 win over Wellington kept WSW in the mix, but a 3-1 loss to Perth on Tuesday – after the scores were locked 1-all with 15 minutes to go – all but kyboshed their chances.

Western United have four games left to climb the ladder. The A-League’s newcomers made their return via a solid 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory. A 1-0 loss to Newcastle on Sunday slowed their momentum, however.

Western United have had the wood on Wanderers in their debut season. They came from behind to record a 2-1 win in Week 5, with Andrew Durante and Kwabena Appiah scoring the goals to negate Mitchell Duke’s opener.

Wanderers were on track for victory in Week 11 when Patrick Ziegler opened the scoring in the 79th minute. But Aaron Calver levelled for United in the 87th to force a 1-all draw.

There is nothing splitting these sides head-to-head. With a much better chance to make the playoffs, Western United hold a fraction more value. Meanwhile, 10 of the 18 games since the restart – and five of the last seven – produced two goals or less.
