The A-League is back for a frantic month of football action to crown a champion for the 2019-20 season. BankWest Stadium hosts a double-header on Wednesday night.
A-League Tips – Perth Glory V Western United
History: Played 1: 1 Draw
Last meeting: October 19, 2019: 1-1 draw at GMHBA Stadium
Final Thoughts: Perth Glory’s spot in the playoffs in now safe, while Western United have three matches to wrangle three points and bump Adelaide out.
The fifth-place Glory’s form since the restart has been underwhelming. Three losses from their five games culminated in a dreadful 4-0 loss to the battling Victory on Saturday. Western United have won two of their three fixtures to date, bookending a 1-0 loss to Newcastle with wins over the Victory (2-1) and Wanderers (5-3).
The teams drew 1-all in their maiden clash in Week 2, with Kristian Popovic’s 76th-minute goal for the Glory cancelling out Pangiotis Kone’s opener.
Western United have games against front-runners Sydney and Melbourne City to come. That would desperately love to eradicate the three-point gap between themselves an Adelaide in this fixture. With the Glory already home and hosed – and in poor form – United’s underdog value is hard to ignore.
Tip: Result – Western United @ $3.00
A-League Tips – Western Sydney Wanderers V Melbourne Victory
History: Played 22: Victory 13 V Western Sydney 5 (4 Draws)
Last meeting: October 18, 2019: Western Sydney 2 d Victory 1 at AAMI Park
Final Thoughts: It’s a dead rubber as out-of-contention Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne Victory bring their 2019-20 campaigns to a close.
Eighth-placed Wanderers stayed in the hunt with a draw against Central Coast and an upset of Wellington in their first two matches back. But heavy losses to Perth (3-1) and Western United (5-3) put paid to their finals hopes.
The second-last Victory’s dismal season continued after the restart with three straight losses to Western United (2-1), Brisbane (2-1) and Central Coast (3-2). But they banked just their sixth win in sensational style on Saturday, trouncing Perth 4-0. Marco Rojas scored a goal in each half of the rout.
Wanderers snapped an 11-match winless streak against Victory – including losses in the previous five clashes – with a 2-1 win in Week 2 this season.
The Victory showed they have some fight left after all and should be favoured to get over a Wanderers side that has leaked eight goals in their last two games.
